Oil painting on canvas showing the port of Barcelona during the 1888 Universal Exposition, one of the great events in the history of the city which began a period of significant urban transformation. As was common in such celebrations, some participating countries sent a representative of their navies, which resulted in a great ceremonial stop at the city’s port. The ships, decorated with flags and often firing salvos, became a notable spectacle. Sivillà’s painting shows the port during the days of the Exposition.
