Eliseu Meifrén was a recognized Catalan landscape painter bridging the 19th and 20th centuries. He studied at La Llotja in Barcelona, taking classes in drawing, colour, anatomy and perspective. Some of his early works from this period, of a notably academic nature, have been preserved. Later, he settled in Paris, where he got to know the painters Casas and Rusiñol and their circle. Once he had returned to Barcelona he visited Sitges, where he was influenced by modernista-style illuminist painting, which he applied with a certain degree of aesthetic conservativism. Meifrén often attended the discussions that took place at Els Quatre Gats.
