The adventure of discovering the underwater world, the last frontier, is represented in the Museum by a series of documents and artefacts. Without a doubt, our most notable collection tells the story of Narcís Monturiol (1819-1885) and his Ictíneos. Monturiol was one of the pioneers of underwater navigation, designing and building two prototype submarines, the Ictíneo I and Ictíneo II. The Museum has a great deal of documentation on Monturiol’s work: documents, blueprints, models, photographs, etc. It even preserves the first submarine flag, flown at Monturiol’s first immersion in 1859. Regarding this Catalan chapter of the development of underwater navigation, the Museum holds a range of materials on the exploration and exploitation of the underwater world.
